Adapted for the stage by Lee Hall

Based on the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard

Directed by Lee Ann Payne

PENINSULA PREMIERE!  Young playwright Will Shakespeare is stuck.  He is overdue in finishing his latest play—a half-baked mess of a comedy called Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter.  He finds his muse in Viola de Lesseps, who is driven to do anything—even disguise herself as a man—to fulfill her dream of performing onstage, where no women are permitted.  Surrounded by familiar players, including Queen Elizabeth herself, backstage antics collide with on stage dramas.  Will and Viola’s passionate, forbidden love affair goes on to inspire Shakespeare’s masterpiece—the most romantic tragedy ever written.  Adapted from the Academy Award-winning film, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is a warm and witty romance filled with music and farcical characters.

Parking Advisory: *Please Note: During SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, the Junior Museum and Zoo Construction Project happening next to the Lucie Stern Theater will be underway.  What this means is the current parking lot has been reduced to less than 30 parking spaces and is only accessible from the Hopkins Ave entrance, as the Middlefield entrance is being used for construction traffic.  As such, we recommend giving yourself at least an extra 20 minutes when traveling to the Lucie Stern Theater, as you may need to access street parking and walk a little bit further than normal to reach the theatre.  We’d also recommend carpooling or ridesharing (Lyft or Uber) as much as possible!  We will update you with further information as we receive it.

All performances are held at the:

Lucie Stern Theater

1305 Middlefield Road

Palo Alto, CA 94301

In cooperation with the City of Palo Alto, Community Services Department, Division of Arts and Sciences
